The Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled down the road to Mehney field in East Grand Rapids for a conference match on Monday evening. With nearly perfect conditions for a soccer match, the Eagles came out hard with their GRITty style of play and created a great chance in the first few minutes of play only to be turned away by the EGR goalkeeper. The Eagles dominated possession throughout the half continued creating chances, but were unable to crack the Pioneer defense to get a goal.
The Eagles took the 2nd half kickoff down the field and immediately earned another shot on goal. The possession game continued to create opportunities for the Eagles until midway through the 2nd half. With 56-minutes gone, Sr. Ana Mucci served a corner kick to the head of Fr. Liv Brunink’s head on the far post to take the 1-0 lead. Not content with that margin, the Eagles continued to press. 12-minutes later, the same pair combined again for Mucci’s 2nd assist and Brunink’s 2nd goal of the game. EGR tried to play the counterattack game launching longballs to the Eagle defenders, but the back line of Jaidyn Kuiken, Rory Pruis and Becca Burroughs held steadfast, anchored by the play of goalkeeper Cami Rushlau.
The 2-0 final at EGR kept the Eagles atop the OK-Gold Conference with a 10-1 record with only two games remaining. The Eagles continue their season with an early match on Wednesday at 4:30 pm at Gainey.
