The Girls Varsity Soccer Team continued to show what GRIT looks like on Wednesday afternoon in a match-up against Thornapple-Kellogg (TK) at Gainey Athletic Facility. The Eagles were determined to play their brand of soccer and took control of the game early with a strong possession advantage that resulted in multiple chances on the TK goal. 13-minutes into the match, Sr. Ana Mucci played a ball from the right wing into Jr. Elizabeth Williams who brought the ball out of the air with one touch and finished into the TK net with the 2nd. The Eagles continued to press in the first half, eventually earning a free kick 30-yards from the TK goal. Williams stepped up and blasted the free kick into the upper corner of the TK net for her 2nd goal of the game. With only a few minutes remaining, TK managed their first shot on goal from distance, with the ball floating in the stiff wind over the Eagles goalkeeper leaving the Eagles with a 1-goal advantage at halftime.
The Eagles came out firing again after halftime. With less than 1-minute gone in the half, freshman Kailynn Grieve, pressed aggressively on a TK defender, forcing a bad pass into the middle of the field that was picked-up by Williams who finished confidently to complete her hat trick. Unfortunately, the same scenario from the first half repeated itself late in the game with TK’s 2nd shot of the game again floating over the Eagles goalkeeper to bring them back within a goal.
The Eagles remained composed and possessed the ball for the remainder of the game to finish out another conference win and remain in a tie for first place. The Eagles effort included key contributions and strong play from every member of the roster.
The Eagles finish a three-game week with a non-conference match-up against ranked Forest Hills Northern on Friday evening at 6:45 pm (at FHN).
