Heart-breaking loss tonight at Canepa Tennis Center. However, it is the best result a JV Eagles Tennis team has had against an East Grand Rapids JV team in recent years. 3 of the 5 losses in the top 8 flights were very tight matches lost in a 3rd set tie break. #1 doubles Mark Haga/Mark Morrison and #4 doubles Dan Betten/Lucas Oezer jumped out to an early lead with 1st set victories but both were unable to hold on to the second set and lost in the 3rd set. #2 doubles Charlie Walters/Brad VanWienen fought back after losing a close first set to win the second set. Again they were unable to overcome EGR in the tiebreak.
Owen Greer and Devin Meeuwsen played a strong match at #3 doubles with an easy first set win, close loss in the second but a very gritty 3rd set tie break winning 6-2,5-7,(11-9). At #6, Cade Boender and Derek Jacobsen struggle at the beginning of their match but fought back in the first barely losing in a tie break. They completely flipped the momentum of the match when they won the second set 6-1 and pushed it into a 3rd set tie break where they won 10-8.
Preston Lewis and Gordon VerMeulen also played a very competitive, intense set at #7 doubles earning the Eagles another point with an 8-5 victory.
Doubles teams of Tommy Doyle/Peter Bos and Julian Ly/Preston Lewis were also able to snag exhibition wins 8-5 and 8-1 respectively. Another big win on the night came from the team of Ethan Brandt and Christian VandenBerg who played a tight set, ending in a tiebreak where they were able to pull out the victory 7-6 (7-5).
Though we all wish the end score was different, the coaches are very proud of the effort given at every level of the team.
