Game Recap Grand Rapids Christian's season ends to Mattawan

The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles played the Region 19 Semi final against the Mattawan Wildcats. A coin toss determined the Eagles had home advantage.

The Eagles scored the only goal of the first period on the power play. The goal was scored by Thomas Rietema who was assisted by David Zwiers and Cole DeVos.

The Second period, the Wildcats began to generate chances at the net and were rewarded. The Wildcats scored twice. The first goal was scored nu Kyle Hedden and the second was scored by Josh Switzer.

In the third period, the Wildcats' Jacob Gevaart scored what would be the Wildcats' game winning goal. Eagles scored their second goal of the game with just over 12 minutes of regulation time left. Capitalizing on a bronken defensive play, Eagles' Tyler Boyd knocked the puck into the Mattawan cage. The Wildcats, however, lost no momentum and scored three unanswered goals to seal their victory and their chance in the Region 19 finals. Those last three goals were scored by Blake Tennis, Jacob Gevaart, and Josh Auyer. Gevaart had five points on the night.

Mattawan will play the winner of tonight's contest between the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids and the Cougars of Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The Region 19 Finals game is scheduled for this Saturday, March 2nd at Patterson Ice Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM

Game Recap An old adage in basketball says it's hard to beat a good team three times in a season. The Eagles found that out first-hand on Wednesday night as it took overtime for GR Christian to top crosstown rival East Grand Rapids 54-51 in district play at Ottawa Hills High School.

The Eagles beat the Pioneers in all three meetings between the two teams this season, but the second and third games both went to OT. In the most recent tilt Christian trailed 30-28 at halftime, but a strong third quarter put Christian up five heading into the fourth frame before the Pioneers mounted a late comeback to force overtime. The Eagles D rose to the occasion in the extra session however, holding East to just two points to seal the W.

Tyra Smith was outstanding with 19 points, while Paris Madison added 14 and Haley Muller had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Christian shot a sterling 48 percent for the game and also was 12-for-16 at the line, where it outscored East by a critical six points.
