The Grand Rapids-area girls tennis players showcased stellar performances week in and week out throughout the season, which concluded with strong runs for themselves and their teams in the state tournament. While this year said goodbye to many talented players, it also shows a bright future for area tennis.
Grand Rapids Christian, Senior
One for the record books, this Grand Rapids Christian No. 1 used a strong work ethic and drive to out-maneuver her opponents. Poortenga took on the best of Division 3 and pushed her team to a fourth-place state finish.
“Maria is the only singles state champion in Grand Rapids Christian school history,” said Eagles coach Tim Morey. “She’s a tremendously hard worker and has won many matches simply because of her ability to outwork and break the will of her opponents. Coaching her personally since a young age, she will be greatly missed by the program.”
A well-deserved honor. Congratulations, Maria!!
