Game Recap

The Grand Rapids Christian girls varsity basketball team kicked off it’s season against one of the toughest teams in the state of Michigan in East Kentwood. By how the Eagles started the game you wouldn’t have thought they were intimidated at all. The first possession of the game, with some feisty defense from Micaela Jones she earned a charge against an EK player. The rest of the first quarter was back and forth and getting the nerves out for both teams. Although the quarter ended in EK’s favor the quarter was much closer with 3 missed layups from the Eagles.

Deesh Beck opened up the 2nd quarter draining a three and adding two free throws to cut the EK lead to 10 points. From there it was a back and forth with both teams battling it out. With 2:23 left in the half Micaela Jones hit a huge three to cut the lead to 9 which would be the closest the Eagles would find themselves in the first half.

After halftime the Eagles came back out ready to play. With some really good ball movement and some stiff defense the Eagles weren’t backing down. Rory Pruis started the half with a steal which lead to Madisyn Tillman cutting the lead down to 10 with back to back scores. The Eagles continued to work hard and with a three from Cook with 3:53 left the lead was cut down to 8.

The forth quarter saw the Eagles continue to defy the odds and cut the lead to 7 with a chance at cutting it to 6. Cook buried a three and then Beck was able to find the back of the net while being fouled to cut the lead to 7 and a chance to make it 6. Beck would miss the free throw. Free throws weren’t on the Eagles side tonight as they missed 11 on the night.

Although the score showed a 19 point loss the game was much closer. The Eagles played well lead by Beck with 19 points and 14 rebounds. “Deesh played great on both ends of the floor. She showed a lot of toughness the entire game” said coach Strickland. Deesh lead the team but the entire GRC team played great tonight and showed a lot of grit.

The Eagles will continue non-conference play on Friday when they travel to Unity Christian. Game time is at 7pm.
