Jacob Witte (Class of 2015)
Jacob Witte earns All-MIAA honors playing for Calvin College men’s soccer. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian, Witte is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team. An outside winger, Witte has received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors once this fall. Witte tallied four goals, seven assists and 15 points in conference games this year. In conference games he ranked third in the MIAA in assists and fifth in goals.
Alex Bergsma – pictured (Class of 2017)
Calvin College freshman Alex Bergsma has been named the MIAA Men’s Diver of the Week. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Bergsma had a strong start to his collegiate career last Friday at the MIAA Relays held at the Venema Aquatic Center. Competing in the synchronized diving competition, Bergsma teamed up with Hope’s Kyle Weck to take second on the one-meter board with a score of 194.10. He teamed up with Weck again on the three-meter board for a fifth place score of 185.95. Bergsma is scheduled to compete again this Friday and Saturday when the Knights host a four-team quadrangular with Ohio Northern, Carthage and Albion at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Xavier Tilman (Class of 2017)
Xavier Tillman has learned that for him, having fun with basketball will lead to success, and he certainly enjoyed his experience back home in Grand Rapids on Sunday.
A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Tillman was back in his hometown with the Spartans for a game that was put together in a matter of days, and the freshman forward received a big ovation from the sold out crowd of almost 11,000 fans when he checked into the game.
“I wasn’t expecting it, but it was crazy,” Tillman said of the welcome home he received. “It was amazing when it happened, but I wasn’t expecting it.”
Mark DeJong (Class of 2014)
For the fourth time in his collegiate career and for the second time this fall, Calvin College senior Mark DeJong
has been selected as the MIAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, DeJong was the top finisher at Saturday’s MIAA Championships with an 8K course time of 24:15.5. DeJong won the race by a six-second margin and helped power the 15th-ranked Knights to a first place team score of 22 points as the Knights finished 29 points clear of second place Albion. DeJong led a Calvin surge that claimed seven of the top nine individual spots at Saturday’s race in Adrian, Michigan. DeJong was part of a Calvin team that claimed its 31st consecutive MIAA title. After Saturday’s competition, he was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Runner and earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team.
Creaghan Diekema (Class of 2016)
Belmont University sophomore Creaghan Diekema
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) was named to the 2017 Horizon League Men’s Soccer All-Academic team the league announced Friday.
The All-Academic team is comprised of 12 student athletes chosen by faculty representatives that have significant classroom and on-field achievements.
Diekema boasts a 3.82 cumulative grade point average and has been named to the Belmont University Dean’s List every semester.
On the pitch, Diekema has had a breakout season as a member of the Bruins’ offensive attack, starting all 15 matches as a forward. He has scored 2 goals and recorded one assist in the 2017 campaign.
