Long time Boy’s and Girl’s head soccer coach, Larry Klaasen, is ready to part ways with the sport that has been such an integral part of his life for longer than a quarter century. After 23 years of coaching girl’s soccer here at GRCHS and 31 years of coaching the boy’s teams, the crafty veteran has decided to hand over the reigns. He leaves behind quite a legacy which will not soon be forgotten and probably never duplicated in today’s world where coaches often come and go with the wind. Klaasen tallied 35 total conference titles as well as 21 district titles, and 2 State Championships in 1998 and 2001. His state champion teams held records of 24-1 in 1998 and 20-4-1 in 2001 to earn the only state championships in soccer in Grand Rapids Christian High School history. The long time coach accrued 811 wins over his career at GRCHS and was able to add one more district championship this past season.
Larry Klaasen will be honored on December 29th at Cornerstone University during half-time of the GRC boys basketball game. A special reminder to fans, friends, and colleagues that the basketball team will play Hudsonville on the 27th and then either Tri-Unity or Wyoming Park on the 29th depending on the outcome of the Hudsonville game. If the Eagles win on the 27th (Tuesday) we will play at 7:30 PM on the 29th (Thursday), if we lose on the 27th we will play at 6 PM on the 29th.
Thank you for your continued support of Eagles athletics and we look forward to showing our appreciation for Larry and his many years of service.
Go Eagles.
