Wednesday afternoon the Quest Center at Grand Rapids Christian High exhibited an energy level that was already percolating. A District match up between 3rd ranked East Grand Rapids and 4th ranked Forest Hills Eastern began at 4:30 pm in a battle of two of the top teams in the state followed by a 6pm match up between our own Eagles from Grand Rapids Christian and the Panthers from Comstock Park. The early game went the distance in an action packed 5 set thriller in which EGR took the final set 15-11 to knock the Hawks of FHE out of the tournament. After winning the first set, the Pioneers dropped the next two before taking control and winning the final two sets of the match. In the later game, the Eagles easily ushered Comstock park to a quick trip home with a 3 set victory. The final scores were 25-11, 25-10, 25-7. The Eagles and Pioneers will now battle for the District Title Saturday at 11 am inside the Quest Center, just a few short hours after the two schools battle for supremacy on the gridiron at Eagles Stadium.
“We’ve only seen East twice, and they won both times, but one of those was in four sets,” GR Christian coach Tiffannie Gates said. “I think it will be competitive. We’ve gotten better and stronger as the year’s gone on, and we’re up to the challenge.”
The Eagle volleyball team has turned it on as of late and go into Saturday’s match up with a new found wave of confidence as they look to upset East Grand Rapids. It should be a great weekend of high school sports action as football playoffs enter their second week and volleyball District Finals take place around the area.
Be sure to get out and support Eagle athletics as they take the main stage on Friday night and Saturday morning!
